Prevent means “to keep something from happening or arising.” So Preventive Healthcare is doing things that will keep you from getting illnesses. Preventive Healthcare is not 100% as people that do their best to stay healthy still get cancer and have heart attacks. The absolute truth is. People that engage in preventive health practices LOWER the risk of developing a serious medical condition.
Let’s talk a bit about RISK, or the chance of something occurring. PREVENTION and risk are opposites. Think of it as a scale.
The more prevention there is, the less risk there is and vice versa. Everything you do for Prevention lightens the Risk of getting or developing a serious illness.
Remember the very wise saying, “An ounce of Prevention is worth a pound of Cure”?
Label the following below as Prevention or Risk
John: Never sees a doctor unless he is very sick.
Mary: Has routine annual checkups with labs.
Bill: 57 years old and keeps putting off his colonoscopy. Sally: Avoids her mammogram because it hurts.
Joe: Keeps up with all his suggested vaccines including flu shots.
Betty: Reports any unusual signs or symptoms to her doctor.
Johnny (10 y/o): (Sad) Has never been to a doctor, dentist, or had an eye exam.
Where are you and your family on the scale?
